General Information

Purpose

The Deutsche Schule Kuala Lumpur (German School Kuala Lumpur) is a German-language school abroad supported by the Bundesverwaltungsamt (BVA). The school provides a comprehensive education for the German and German-speaking students, enabling them  to continue their education abroad consistent with German standards. The DSKL offers quality German education in a unique Malaysian setting; students are guaranteed an enriching education experience benefitting from being located in a country with a rich historical, cultural and environmental background. Students in year 10 take final examinations (GSE) to get a Haupt- oder Realschulabschluss (junior high school or high school) or the admission to continue studying, leading to the German International Abitur (DIAP).

 

Sponsors

The DSKL is fully supported by “Deutscher Schulverein Malaysia” (DSM), and all parents of students are required to be members. In addition, German industries in Malaysia as well as individuals support the DSKL by being members of “Deutscher Schulverein Malaysia”.

 

Admission

Although children of all nationalities are welcome to the DSKL, a prerequisite is that they possess a good command of the German language. Admission into year 1 strictly follows German education standards. However, students coming from other German schools can expect to continue at the same level at DSKL. Students having attended Non-German schools may be required to pass a German aptitude test before admission is considered.

 

Structure

DSKL has the following structure

Nursery group:         Infants 18 months to 2 and a half year

Kindergarten:           Infant school for children being 2 and a half year and older

Primary School:       Year 1 to year 4 (Children 6 to 10 years)

Secondary 1:           Year 5 to year 10 (Children 11 to 16 years)

Secondary 2:           Year 11 to year 12 (Children 17 years and older)
                                   from school year 2007/08

 

Teachers

Currently DSKL has a staff of highly qualified and trained teachers. Five teachers have been appointed directly by the Bundesverwaltungsamt (Head Office of the Schools Abroad). In addition to these, DSKL has 10 other qualified teachers either from Germany, Austria or Switzerland and a German-speaking Malaysian teacher. The Kindergarten has four German teachers and two qualified Malaysian Pre-school teachers.

 

Parents association

  • are participating together with the teachers in the process of deciding general matters in the DSKL during special school conferences
  • are responsible for organizing special events at the DSKL
  • represent the parents` interests

  

Students

 To date (February 2007) 183 students are enrolled at the DSKL, 45 of whom attend Kindergarten.

  

Curriculum

The lessons are held in German in accordance to the Thuringia curriculum. However, it is made relevant for students studying in a Malaysian setting.

 

Orientation

Students in year 5 undergo special assessments and are streamed according to their performance and abilities. During this year students are assessed and prepared for the various types of educational levels (GSE, A-levels). At the end of year 5 parents receive detailed reports about their children`s performance.

 

Foreign languages

The lessons are held in German. Basic English is taught in year 1 – 4 (which is the lingua franca in Malaysia).  English grammar and vocabulary lessons begin in year 5. The second foreign language is French and is taught from year 6. Students coming from schools where they have been taught a different foreign language will be granted more time to get used to the new system. Since 2003/04 German is being offered as a foreign language to those students of mixed parentage. These lessons are for students from year 1 - 4.

 

Lunch time

During all longer school breaks and lunchtime students can always buy snacks, fruit and a warm meal from the school canteen.

 

The partnerships and contacts to other schools

The DSKL has close contacts to the French School Kuala Lumpur through school visits and exchange programmes.  There are regular sport meet with many international schools e. g. football, volleyball, basketball, swimming and athletics. 

 

Times

Nursery group:        Monday – Thursday 8.00 am – 12.00 pm

Kindergarten:          Monday – Friday  8.00 am – 1.00 pm

 School:                   All lessons start at 8.00 am and end at 11.30 am, 12.30 pm,
                               1.30 pm respectively 3.30 pm according to the individual time
                               tables.

The extra curricular activities are held in the afternoon.

 

School books

The schoolbooks can either be bought or borrowed. Cost of purchase vary between RM 300.- and RM 1.400.- per form and per school year.
