First Parent Letter of the School Year 2008/09 (translated by students of grade 11)
Dear Ladies and Gentleman, Dear Parents,
I would like to welcome you to the new school year 2008/09. I hope you have enjoyed the holidays and are eager to start into a new year at the DSKL.
The number of addressees receiving this letter has surely increased, due to a gain of students by 10%. We would also like to forward this letter to the members of the German Speaking Society Kuala Lumpur (GSSKL). At the end of this letter you can find further information about the GSSKL.
Including kindergarten we now have 214 students attending the DSKL. Not only the number of students has grown, there has also been an increase in our teaching staff because we now have our first grade 12 and are about to expand our German language training programme.
New teachers are:
Mrs. Bindrich, class teacher of grade 3;
Mrs. Merabet, principal of the kindergarten;
Mrs. Thomas, class teacher of grade 5 and teacher of German and Theatre;
Mr. Päch, class teacher of grade 7 with Maths and Physics;
Mr. Zenzen, class teacher of grade 11 with History, French and Sports.
Other new members are two trainees in the kindergarten as well as three further interns in the school which support our all-day school programme by helping out in after school activities until the Christmas break.
Since August 11th, all week before the start of the new school year, our teachers and administration attended intensive trainings and meetings to be prepared for the new school year. A new picture of the whole teaching staff can be found on our school homepage:
http://www.dskl.edu.my/kollegium1.html
The trainings were based on differentiation in class, on theory and praxis of the German language training programme and of course on the application of information technology during class.
A draft of a mission statement for our school has been created and passed on to the school management. Also, an order for the class trips has been made. Trips have been scheduled for October 28 -31. Both our 10th classes are going to use these days for intense studies concerning their graduation.
The subject order and discipline at the DSKL has been discussed as well. For students from grade 10-12, a regulation has been introduced, so that the students are only allowed to leave school in class free time or during lunch break. This regulation which will be empowered on September 1st says, that only students with a special identification card containing a pass photo on it are allowed to leave the school grounds. These identification cards are currently prepared by a group of teachers.
The staff would like you to pay attention to the following 6 points of our compound rules
- No entering of the school building before classes begin
- School bags should be stored correctly in the appropriate shelves in front of the
ground floor school entrance
- Locking of classrooms during breaks
- No running in the building and hallway
- wearing of correct school uniform
- Students attending classes 10-12 may leave the school compound only with an ID
Before the holidays the teachers’ meting had already decided to get new red school shirts for Students from grade 10-12. These shirts have been delivered and are available in our school shop now.
There was a further focus on the preparation for the school inspection which is supposed to take place in November 2009. A School inspector from Hamburg explained in a PowerPoint-based presentation how to undergo such an inspection. On the last day the teachers once again dealt with the qualities of a good school and how they are presented in the „Qualitätsrahmen des Bundes und der Länder”, of course with the intention to fulfil those expectations at the DSKL.
To ease the week filled with information, a trip was organized which led the teaching staff and the administration to Kuala Selangor and to the fireflies.
Introduction of all-day school programme for grade 3-9
There will be some homework supervision for all students up to grade 9. With the help of the teachers the students will be able to finish most of their homework at school. We have to inform that these teachers are no tuition teachers, they are mainly supposed to take care that the students do their homework on their own. With the help of a “homework book” the teachers decide in which order the students should do their homework.
Only when the children have finished their homework, will they be allowed for example to read in their own books, play parlour games or use the computer for school interests. They are only allowed to leave the classroom when they are under surveillance of a teacher or if they are in any tutoring classes or any music classes.
On Wednesday August 20th, the all-day programme will start for all students from grade 3-9, with classes daily to 15:30, except for Fridays. For this all-day programme the students have chosen different courses. We hope we are able to fulfil most of the wishes – if this won’t be the case in the first half of the school year, we are sure that it should happen in the second half of the year. Anyway, the offer is huge: students can learn how to play chess or to speak Chinese, to build scale models, fashion design, table tennis, pottery, dancing, badminton, basketball, and the offer in Sports has essentially increased.
You’ll find the timetables, including those for the co-curricular activities (CCAs), here:
http://www.dskl.edu.my/stundenplaene1.html
For the first days, in which these new offers will start, we ask you to be patient if something doesn’t work the way it should. The supervision of your children is assured in any case.
Yesterday, we handed out the school books and other materials required. Please check, if your children have all the books and materials they need. Any disagreements can be clarified with Mrs. Shastri till Friday 22nd, 2008 in the first break between 9.35 and 9.55 am. After this date the schoolbooks and school materials will be charged as given, respectively the borrowed books will be claimed by the end of the school year.
Important dates:
The school enrolment of the kindergarten into the flex classes will be officially celebrated in the theatre room on August 22nd at 10.00 am
